Curtis L. Murray Jr. returned to Elevating Faith with Pastor Gwen on KBOB 89.9 FM during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month for a powerful conversation about prostate cancer, faith, family, community, and the growing mission of Curt Cares, Inc. and AskDad™.
Curt opened by sharing his own journey, beginning with what he thought was a routine health concern in 2021. A PSA test led to further evaluation and, just days later, a late-stage prostate cancer diagnosis. He went on to complete 44 radiation treatments—an experience that challenged him physically, emotionally, and spiritually and ultimately helped shape his purpose as an advocate.
The conversation turned to the importance of PSA testing and why men should not wait for obvious symptoms before paying attention to their prostate health. Curt reflected on how easy it was to dismiss changes in his own body as simply getting older. Looking back, he could recognize signs, but at the time nothing seemed alarming enough to make him think he had cancer.
Curt also shared the personal story behind AskDad™, the signature campaign of Curt Cares, Inc. He explained how a conversation with a loved one helped influence his own decision to move forward with treatment. That experience became part of the inspiration for encouraging families to have heartfelt conversations with the men they love about their health. AskDad provides conversation starters, digital cards, educational resources, and tools designed to make starting those conversations easier.
Faith was woven throughout the discussion. Curt spoke openly about finding purpose during one of the darkest periods of his life and how his relationship with God helped transform his cancer experience into a calling to serve others. He also challenged faith communities to think beyond traditional ministry and consider the important role churches can play in health education, outreach, and connecting people with resources—especially in rural and underserved communities.
Curt and Pastor Gwen also discussed the importance of approaching people through relationships rather than simply giving them information. Curt emphasized that trust has to come first, particularly when asking men to make difficult decisions about their health. As he shared during the conversation, “Nobody cares what you know until they know that you care about them.”
The discussion expanded beyond awareness to access. Curt highlighted resources available to help people find screening and support, while also discussing the barriers faced by underserved and rural communities. He shared how Curt Cares is working to connect people with resources and how the AskDad Screening Locator can help families identify prostate cancer screening locations in their communities.
Throughout the interview, Curt returned to the idea that meaningful change often begins with something simple: one person caring enough to start a conversation. Whether that conversation happens between a wife and husband, daughter and father, brother and brother, or within a church family, the goal is the same—to help men know that someone cares and encourage them to take the next step for their health.
A simple ask can make a big difference.
CurtCares is committed to turning lived experience into action — helping families start earlier conversations, seek trusted guidance, and take the next step toward awareness and early detection.
